The Friendly Dragon of Dungate Manor

A very unusual but sociable resident has been welcomed into Dungate Manor Care Home in Reigate.

Carol Graham is the dedicated owner of a red leatherback female bearded dragon called Phoenix.

When Carol needed to move into a care home, she was determined to find one that would allow her beloved pet to come with her.

She was absolutely delighted to discover that Phoenix also would be welcome at Dungate Manor, which specialises in providing first-class person-centred residential and dementia care.

Both Carol and Phoenix have made themselves at home with the dragon, who has a tank in Carol’s bedroom, proving to be popular with other residents with her making regular visits to the communal lounge.

Carol has an established track record as an animal lover having, in the past, owned Degus, Chinchillas and a blue lobster.  She also has three cats, which are being cared for at home by her husband.

A Person-Centred Home-From-Home

The home, based off Flanchford Road, prides itself on being a person-centred home-from-home for its residents. There is a strong emphasis on helping those living there to continue and develop their interests and hobbies.

Abdul Rifai, manager of the home, which specialises in residential and dementia care, said: “We never forget that this is our residents’ home and it’s really important that they are happy and settled here. Phoenix has quickly become a firm favourite with everyone. She is very gentle and quite happy that everyone dotes on her!”

Carol and Phoenix are very welcome members of the Dungate Manor family.

Carol said: “Bearded dragons form a very strong bond with one person, and I know that Phoenix would have been very unhappy if she was separated from me.

“It’s wonderful that she can be with me at Dungate Manor and I know she also brings a lot of joy to everyone here.”
